Any specific areas of interest: fasm, assembly, CPU, FPU, SSE, AVX, linking, IDE, DOS, Windows, *nix? There are many areas that are topics on this board.

Maybe one of the FAQ pages can help, in those are many links to resources.

I know this is several months old, but if you are still looking for learning material, i found this book that covers Assembly programming using the Flat Assembler (FASM).

The book is called "Mastering Assembly Programming" by Alexey Lyashko, and it's one of the only books i could find that uses FASM to teach assembly programming, also it's modern so it covers AVX-512 and SSE. There is dedicated examples for using with Windows and Linux as well. The book is about 290 pages so it's not that big, but it also isn't entirely comprehensive just by skimming the table of contents. I would recommend reading it to learn FASM, and then when you want something more in depth, you could look at "Assembly Language for x86 Processors" by Kip Irvine, but that book only targets MASM, but you'd probably only want to learn more about the language in that book rather than the MASM assembler.

The book can be purchased on Amazon for $58 AUD (Australian), so just check and see how much it is in your country, might be cheaper on Ebay if you don't mind second hand books (i don't mind). Alternatively, if you want a PDF version, i have attached the link to Anna's archive for the book in question so you can view it. But like all books in digital format, i would encourage you to see if you like it digitally, and then support the author by purchasing a real copy, hope this all helps.

Edit: Also, i believe this is the exact same book Tomasz Grysztar references in this post "Unused foreword for an assembly book" here https://board.flatassembler.net/topic.php?t=21553

No, that was another book, one that ended up without my participation.

But "Mastering Assembly Programming" actually had me involved, and you can find me credited there as a reviewer. Looking back at it, I regret I had not been able to dedicate more time to it, as my work was very shallow.

Ah alright, thanks for the reply! If you don't mind, what was the name of that book as well? I will take practically any source of information that expands on how to learn and use your Assembler.

I'm brand new to coding and fasmg is the first thing I want to learn. The most useful tutor so far for me is AI. I've been using it in the browser so it can't touch my files until very recently, when a friend helped me set up claude code in a podman. I started by asking it to write a short, easy program that I wanted to exist, and then having it explain each thing, line by line, instruction by instruction, to me.

AI is great for explaining things, but do not overly rely on it. You should still be learning by example, while it is easy to prompt AI about a particular problem and it gives you the solution, the critical part that is often missed is that you aren't thinking about solving the problem, and that the problem itself is learning about something in particular, in this case you are learning assembly programming.

I feel like this gap stunts critical thinking, since i still think it is important to figure out the "why" yourself because if you don't you are just laying your entire foundation on things you didn't have to think about and it may result in worse problem solving.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't use AI, but i think you should still try and learn by reading books or documentation, because you will eventually just end up vibe coding in the end if you overly rely on AI, and that's not what assembly programming is about. There is plenty of materials available that is modernized for assembly programming, it is just hard to find material relating to this specific assembler, and even worse, material for interfacing assembly with modern APIs like Vulkan for example, or none at all.

You could, of course, get yourself a local LLM that you can tinker with to produce FASM compatible reading material based on already existing books by converting them. I have used ChatGPT to completely translate a Russian Assembly book that uses FASM as it's assembler because no English version is available, and i will take any and all information about FASM and programming in FASM as i can get, even if i have to have an entire book translated.

Very cool. Would you be willing to share your/chatgpt's translation? If it's in e-pub, that would be wonderful.

Sure, the book is Программирование на ассемблере на платформе x86-64 (Руслан Аблязов), the translated title being Assembly Programming on the x86-64 Platform (Ruslan Ablyazov).

I cannot assure you of the integrity of the translation however. I skimmed through most of it and it looks fine but i did notice some issues with some explanations being talked about in the third person that was leftover from ChatGPT, but if you can ignore those things when you see them it should be fine.

I will most likely be having other books translated because i've found that there is a couple more circulating in different languages likes french and bulgarian that have no english counterparts available. Rather than posting each one of them on this post i will make a separate post with all the translations included.

The translation is in PDF form.
