I built a computer specifically for working with assembly level programming and such (which happens to be the one from which I am inputing this to this forum). I bought a cheap "Sempron 64-bit CPU", the reasoning being that, since assembly is down-to-the-metal programming, so to speak, then at least it won't be a great expense to replace, if I accidently cause damage to it... Im completely new to assebly programming though, so that was just my "best guess", as it were. I've already briefly tried the MS Windows FASM, and FASM seems to be what I'm looking for, assembly wise.

Anyway:

The computer (this computer) is currently running on the Linux OS (Fedora Core 5, with KDE as default, and the ctrl-alt-f1run level 3 switch used for terminal use), which I, just last night in fact, got set up how I want it (after having, over about 1 week's time, tried Gentoo Linux, NetBSD, FreeBSD, and Fedora Core 5, in that order, then switching between them until I decided which one I prefered). The Fedora "yum" package system didn't seem to have a package for FASM (nor did any of the other UNIX OSs I had previously tried), as far as I can discern.

So: how do I install and use FASM? (and does it include manual pages?)?

for Linux:

login to your server..

type "wget http://flatassembler.net/fasm-1.67.tgz"
type "tar xfvz fasm-1.67.tgz"
there will be shown a unpack history
then type "cd fasm"
then type "chmod 777 fasm"
then type "./fasm sorcefile.asm binfile.bin"

NOTE: the FASM for Linux is NOT comming with a Graphical Interface.
So you must write your programs in a Texteditor or under Windows and then compile them using ./fasm filename.in filename.out (filename.in = would be your sourcecode . eg. test.asm"
