                I tried designing a few CPU components on edge-connect cards, where they'd plug in to a backplane to make a complete processor. I overengineered them and ran out of 7400 chips, and that was the end of that.  |

                  I'd say go for it. Make a very simple CPU just a few bits wide with just a few instructions. The experience alone will be worth it.
