'nix devs know better than to use Windows. They know it well and that's why they avoid it. Windows devs know nothing outside of Windows because there aren't enough point/click thingies for them to figure it out and not enough popups to tell them what to do instead of understanding how things work. So they are less knowledgeable about 'nix than 'nix devs are about Windows.

Two things: Popularity and "Getting used to it".

When I say that even TECHNICAL people "get used to Windows" I mean to the details, but more correctly would be to say "DOS-style" rather than "'nix-style", that's why it's a major "jump" especially for technical people, not for the average user (who only knows about a gui).

While I agree things like registry are crap, people get used to them, to installers that way, etc... (and I hate it, but I have to admit, I got used to it as well).



Second would be popularity. That means applications -- not Windows itself. I know Wine works reasonably well but not perfect for most intensive apps.

And last thing would be... DRIVERS.

The thing is not that Windows is great -- it's that people WRITE FOR IT.

just to say, i have a collegue at work who says it can be a good thing to pay for using windows instead of paying for having windows.

what the pb with free OSes?
they cannot pay for drivers compatibility as windows do.

we just use PC for DATA isn't it?

I use Archlinux. But I support ubuntu and opensuse for beginning users.

Windows XP x64 on a partition in order to run software that I can't run properly in linux. But it very rarely gets used.

Most the stuff I use doesn't work properly in windows ^^. There's no terminal in windows that satisfies my thirst of POWER!

A lot of FreeBSD people highly recommend ArchLinux.

I have a web application I wrote. One of my customers has a Windows PC that runs his store's cash register and has an attached printer. His customers can order things from this online web site and he wanted to be able to print from this PC.

When an order comes in, the web app creates a text page at an assigned URL. In my office, I wrote about 10 lines of bash script to retrieve the page and print it on my printer. I went looking for something similar in Windows. I am not allowed to install anything on the customer's computer except a script so I asked around and was told VBScript would work best and someone even wrote it for me, in about 20 lines.

The only problem is, you can't select anything but the default printer. The default, in this case, is the customer's receipt printer. I need to print on the secondary letter-size printer. I went to 7 different forums, including Microsoft's vbscript newsgroup, and no one knew how to do it. I finally found a MSDN article that stated you can only print on the default. So we're screwed.

'nix to the rescue! I found out all of my customers sites had fax machines. By just changing 2-3 lines in my bash script, I just let one of my office boxes fetch the page and fax it to the customer. Inconvenient for me because it can tie up a line for a minute but it's good enough for now.

The customer asked me if it was possible to just switch out all his cash registers and put his software on 'nix (actually FreeBSD). Smile

@drhoward just an FYI

The first result on google says you can use VBScript to "change" the default printer, print and then "change" the default printer back to the original. So while the solution is clunky it exists.

Yes, it's true. You can change the default and print on it, but what happens if, during the print job, another one gets in the queue bound for the receipt printer? It gets printed on the default instead. I needed a way to print on the second one without changing the default setting. It can't be done. Plus, the receipt printer can't wait on the secondary printer to finish.

Yes, i've looked into FreeBSD, i would try it if there was a set of nvidia drivers for the x86-64 version of it Wink. Thats the only thing holding me back at the moment. But I might try solaris in the future.

That was over two years and two FreeBSD versions ago, so I don't know where that stands now. iirc, only one of the issues outlined there was a valid complaint for nvidia, if it's the same one I remember reading back then. I spoke to the developer who told me he was writing that missing functionality but, like I said, that was two years and two versions ago and I don't keep track of those things. ATI has a much better track record.

Yes, indeed, very true. Windows is quite okay, as evidenced by the fact that 90+% of the world use it successfully to do what they need.

Being able to do what you want does not make anything better. Might does not make right.

There's a video on YouTube from The Tonight Show where they had two people compete sending text messages. One used a cellphone. The other used Morse code. Morse code beat texting by a mile. Does that mean we should all use Morse?

By the same analogy, people get their work done successfully using any other operating system, too, so doesn't that make every other operating system "quite OK"?

90% of desktops use Windows because 1) Microsoft illegally forced manufacturerrs to auto install it on them and 2) MS made it easy for the average Joe. So it's what people got used to, not necessarily because the OS is any good.

I think you have said a very true thing there "MS made it easy for the average Joe." Very very true. Now Linux, et al, need to do the same.

Not yet, Linux is not yet easy for JP. They have to expend effort to download it and install it. that alone is a BIG hurdle for many people. Much easier to simply buy the computer and use whatever OS is already there (which of course, means it will have Windows).

Sorry but Linux is not there yet. For tech people like ourselves here n this forum it is a no-brainer to install an OS (and even use it in a VM) but JP don't know what that even means.
