A friend of mine put a nice suite (over 40megs) of DOS tools
on a CD-R for me....
well it wont read.
my host is a laptop /w no floppy drive--
besides, I cant see spending hours copying to disk.
I think I need a driver but I dont know where to start.
Any clues???

ps- sorry if this isnt fasm related but not too many places that
give a thought to DOS anymore...kinda 'hackerish' now

Have you tried "cd /d d:"
where d:\ is your cd drive?

And what processor, HDD, etc. is your laptop? Maybe you could boot up in a GUI OS (like Windows), copy it all to HDD, and then use it w/command prompt.

I had CD's that wouldn't read on my new computer,
so I installed a .4 speed CD drive and it read fine.
It was something to do with speed I think.
If you're looking for drivers, you might look for something that emulates
a x4 speed on a x48 reader CD drive ?
I don't know if one exists, but it's a thought.

Paul, can you use other CD's in the laptop without problems? It might just be that it's a very old drive which doesn't handle home-burnt CD's very well... especially if it's a CD-RW and not a CD.

Well, do you have any system *installed* on it that allows you to read CDs? If you need DOS support for the CD drive (and it's relatively new), try finding an ATAP.SYS driver + mscdex... or, you could boot knoppix and use that to copy over files... assuming knoppix allows you to remove the CD - if not, you can probably use one of the very tiny gentoo install CDs to do this.

Thanks for the help.
I'll look around.
Yeah Knoppix wont let me remove the disk.
tried to unmount it -- says device is busy.
Maybe I could unload the module...
But I guess it all depends on what gets loaded
into memory. Whatever isnt will need to access the
cd-rom in any case.
