Well I'm sure everyone here already knows about the famous "Great Firewall of China". And of course there are many other countries that do similar things. I've been to some of those countries and it can be very frustrating.

And now the latest country to start doing it ... Australia! I hope that all our fellow Australian users here will complain to the maximum about it. It is the start of a slippery slope to nowhere good.

The Australian government said Tuesday it would begin testing a pilot system next month to filter harmful information from the Internet....

Sad.
How is "harmful" defined?
for example, Microsoft, for decades considered competitors "harmful". IBM, and Intel, similarly crushed commercial rivals, establishing monopoly conditions, to "prevent harm".

Jumping ahead a couple of decades, to the late 1990's, think of the Taliban. These folks consider "harmful", the message that women ought to be treated as equals to men. They consider "dangerous" the idea of educating females, of any age, but particularly as schoolgirls. For Taliban and other devout muslims, jews and christians, the "holy" books dictate what is "evil" or "harmful", and what is just, proper and good.
Imagine that the Catholics, or Mormons, or Jehovah's Witnesses, or any other religious clique, including Buddhists, Hindus, Zoroastrians, or any of the others, took control of the internet, and dictated what the rest of us could, or should see, read, or interact with.

All of these male dominated, male engineered religions share one common feature: they all consider women as intellectually inferior to men.
Were they to succeed in controlling the internet, women would be educated, on equal footing with men, only exceptionally. Accordingly, women would have minimal access to the internet, and/or, the internet would cease to offer material of interest to women as professionals, since their role in society, is defined by all religions as relegated exclusively to bearing, and rearing, children.

I see no easy solution.
For every one like me, who wishes to leave the internet unopposed, unobstructed, and not redacted, there are a thousand who would like "parental controls" placed by society, to filter out, not just the smut, but also the competitor religious kooks.

The religious goofballs are winning.
I am on the losing side, again....
Sad

tom you do like to blame religion for everything don't you? The chinese government is officially atheist, for example.

not all religious 'freaks' out there are the "either white or black" you keep telling about. Sure there are close minded out there, but so are some atheists for example. A good way to religion would be to not avoid questions when asked, and answer them like in philosophy.

but trust me censorship goes far beyond religious 'problems'

If you can't legislate morality then brainwash the people into submission!
(For their own good, of course. Amen.)

Religions are about submission - you must give yourself to them (the higher power). Turn off your brain and just follow the instructions.

Fortunately we still have little censorship. Even forbidden fascist-like organizations are free to publish on internet.

I think only child porn and stuff like that can be censored.

Well I didn't really want the discussion to be about religion, but I guess that was naive of me to expect that. So, okay, why not, I'll reply here, although mostly tongue-in-cheek.

That would mean we are turning humans into CPUs. Just blindly follow the instructions given no matter where it may take you.

the rest is free human knowledge that should never be censored, even terrorism propaganda, because it is a kind of evil's jauge.

but tom is true.
it is very hard for humans to decide by themselves what is bad or good because of RELIGIONS, LAWS, and MEDIAS.

brainwashing, it can be the beautifull song of the year.

if human = CPU, then, MEDIA will clame AI exist, and broadcast movies to proove that... on the public TV.

have you ever saw "IDIOCRACY", very true movie about our future, if we don't try to change the current crisis.

yes, there is a WORLD CRISIS, this crisis is old, but is going to grow fast nowacays.
like a big system, the BABYLON THEATER is halting again

ALTANTIS then ANTIQUITY
BABYLON then MIDDLE AGE
NOW then ???

merry christmas.

How could humanity evolve? Is it something which manifests from openness to change, or is it something we need to be active participants in? Funny how the active ones want others to be passive and open to change.
