No, it's because a 15 inch widescreen has much less surface area compared to a 15 inch 4:3 screen. That makes widescreens much cheaper to manufacture.

The foveal vision (where we can actually see sharply) is not wider than it is tall as far as I know (it should be circular).

The circular bit is also something I vaguely remember but that also ties in with what I said earlier.
