Do you know any good search engine you would recommend other than Google?

Recently I tried cuil, but it has some flaws - first, sometimes it's very hard to find some website that is easy to find by Google (I guess it might be because of manipulating the position in Google search results; hmmm, that's a huge problem if one want to move to using some other search engine); second: it's putting some ridiculous images next to links to this website when you type "fasm" into search box. Cuil was a loser right out the gate. Google does the job. Use Google. Use Yahoo for whatever reason you didn't use Google. Do not use Microsoft's LiveSearch cause it's not much better than Cuil.

You mean there are other search engines? Shocked I thought Google was the only search engine.

One presumes you have tried MSN, Yahoo, Ask, Answers etc. since they are commonly known. So are you looking for a more specialised/non-main-stream engine?

Just what do you mean by "good"? One that puts fasm at the top?

By "good" I just mean "able to replace Google in the everyday use".

I use Dogpile on occasion. It's not a singular search engine, it uses several search engines at once and returns all results to you.

Oh, guys, I'm telling you that I don't want to use Google and you point me to use the Google for the task? Pity. Wink

So far, exalead is the only one that satisfied me in some 'trial searches'. Wink
Yes, it is even listed on that top 100 list, however you wouln't be able to tell only by its name, that it is substantially better than the others... It is! (However, many of them are even not a 'general search' engines, but only a specialized ones, and some of them seem to be just a meta-search engines, that still use Google among others under the hood; that's not what I'm looking for)

Yeah, I also used Altavista around 1999-2000. It was one of the best ones at that time.

PS. And now I found (this time using exalead Wink) a bit better top 100 list: http://www.altsearchengines.com/category/the-top-100-lists/

A few quick searches shows that exalead indexes only about 1/10 of what Google indexes. I'm curious to know what you found wrong with Google compared to exalead?

if you don't like google, ok.

then, try blackle.

or create fasmle, pinkle, redle, greenle, freele.

the reality is there, google is THE reference or search engines, even if it looks more like a new M$, it is like that, as M$ it is the best, because it have the exclusivity.
even if it is wrong to use google, you don't have the choice. Sad

I think too many people consider Google bad because it's big and not because it has done anything wrong. Microsoft has been proven criminal over and over. Some fear Google for what it could do or might do but not because it has done anything.

reality is hard to swallow.....
but i kinda believe in the future, search engines would be more specified...
maybe religion search engine, plant, insects, computer, books and so on.
they will each have their own popular search engine.

until then, google, yahoo. pretty much is what we could depend,
unless we want to use search engine to find nothing

Well, it surely depends on ones point of view, what is considered 'doing anything wrong'. However I know many people that consider for example this to be wrong, for certain:

See also http://news.zdnet.co.uk/internet/0%2c1000000097%2c39284491%2c00.htm

I'm not saying this is the reason why I'm looking for other usable search engines, I just want to point out, that for some people it may not be so true, that "Google has not done anything wrong".

Did anything change over the years? What are your favorite search engines? Does any of the alt search engines seem to be good enough to replace the big one?
