Suppose I want to parse large chunks of text, which (portable) scripting language is the fastest?
Of course I could use ASM or C++, but I want to know regarding scripting.

Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, Tcl, Lua?

which one is faster?

My guess is Perl. But anyone actually benchmarked or read about it somewhere?

Thanks

Faster? Under what conditions? Which CPU(s)? Multi-core aware? Are you mostly using short strings or long strings? String array handling? How many strings? Unicode or ASCII? Which string functions are needed, left, right, trim, mid, append, search? Which version of the language? Is the language interpreted or compiled? Do you use a JIT compiler? Which OS?

There are so many ways in which to test for "fastest". And one persons results may not match with another persons results.

and ASM x86 Wink, or asm sparc.

maybe a modern cray can interpret 100 Tbytes of text in one millisecond.
then, the language don't have a big influence.
