I'm curious, how often do you people shut your computers down?
I leave mine running 24/7 (I'm too impatient to wait for it to startup in the morning.)

I have 7 computers and 5 of them are always on. ( Two servers, a NAS, a notebook I use as "terminal", and a "Power Workstation" PC ). The other two are for tests and driving some strange laboratory equipment so they are off every now and then.
Most of these pc have power saving features enabled, but I keep the HDDs from shutting off.
One of my server is a K6-200 bought back in 1996 and it has a 2GB HDD without a single bad cluster. Never had a single hardware problem except from fans ( every year or so I clean and lubricate them, or substitute if really in bad shape ).

I think that stress made during shutting off/power on on hardware components damages them more than just leaving them running.

My desktop is in my bedroom, and over the years it started to make quite a bit of noise. So now I shut it down before I go to sleep.

Just replaced my desktop system which runs 24/7. The new system is less than 200 watts with everything running full tilt - very quiet, too. Was more expensive to keep running the old hardware than to replace my desktop system - I'll save more over the next five years than the upgrade cost. The laptop computer shuts down by itself whenever not in use, but it only consumes about 20-25 watts anyhow.

Maybe you should replace a dying PSU fan.
Also make sure the HDD is well screwed to the case.

this subject was still aborded , i replyed that i shut off my pc ones a day.
but now, it is different, as it is a laptop and it don't make any noise while running, i shut off it only when i don't use it at all.
sometimes, the PC is open one or two weeks, 24/24, playing MP3.
but sometimes, i am bored of the light of the screen , it is hard to sleep with electronic equipment working.

some studes about electricity and health:

some peoples who worked a lot closed to electric parts are very sensitive and cannot live with electricity now. they are something like ironmens.

so, be carrefull, don't sleep with electricity.
