I think it is a LOT more complicated than that. It is not as easy as some would have us believe. Indeed it is an extremely hard problem with no consensus on good, let alone feasible, solution(s). And each asteroid would pose a different set of problems requiring a different set of solutions.

@revolution: there are quote a few ways to deflect the incoming rock if
we're given few years of advance warning. A strong country would be able
to do it without involving anyone else.

Simplest thing is a mission to asteroid, where the ion engine is mounted
on the surface. Years of small thrust would be enough to deflect. And that
can be done even now by any country with space launch capability. Give a
decade more of advancing technology -- certainly humanity can no longer
be wiped out by a space rock.

However, as sleepsleep said: we can be all wasted by some superbug,
which can't be killed by any medical intervention, but by our own immune system,
and our system ain't that strong with all the crappy food we've been consuming.

No. The Universe is proved to be 32bit. Very Happy But I made mistake in this source. Closer observation shows that the real code is simpler (as the whole Universe):
Code:
start:
;live, love and be happy
    dec eax
    jnz start
jmp start ; end of the world!
I am not sure why eax is used as a counter. Confused ecx and "loop" would be more natural here. Maybe some speed optimization? Very Happy

So are you implying that the algorithm is flawed?

I don't think that is as easy as you are thinking. If the asteroid is tumbling and spinning in various axes (as most, if not all, do) then trying to direct such a thrust is not a simple matter.

Anyhow, I have also seen many other proposed solutions. Some were ingenious, like painting one side a bright colour (or if the asteroid is naturally bright, painting one side dark) and letting the sun's light pressure gradually push it due to differential thrust mechanisms.

The main thing to realise is that any one solution, which might sound easy in theory, will in fact be really hard and technically tricky with no guarantee that it will succeed. Lots and lots of things could go wrong. I'm not saying we couldn't do it, but with so much at stake and so much being guesswork with numerous unknowns there will be copious amounts of "discussions" and "differences of opinions" to deal with.

Hm, it is hard to say. Maybe it is bug fix, or simply crack. Twisted Evil

Discovered by the LaSagra observatory in southern Spain, the small asteroid 2012 DA14 will pass within about 3.5 Earth radii of the Earth's surface on February 15, 2013. Although its size is not well determined, this near-Earth asteroid is thought to be about 45 meters in diameter. Asteroid 2012 DA14 will pass inside the geosynchronous satellite ring, located about 35,800 km above the equator

It is about the size of a rock which caused Tunguska event.
Eh... even if it will hit somewhere in a desert - we're OK!

There is a nice collection of material here: http://say26.com/meteorite-in-russia-all-videos-in-one-place

And the Phil Plait, whose astronomy-related blog I value very much, is covering it: http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/02/15/breaking_huge_meteor_explodes_over_russia.html

The author of the blog states that the meteor was "almost certainly unrelated to the asteroid 2012 DA14" however the coincidence of the crash and the asteroid pass is just amazing. I wonder, even if the meteor can't be just a part of the asteroid or its "little companion" isn't it possible that the asteroid changed the course of other small celestial bodies along its path?

"Huge" meteor was about 2 meters in diameter.
It is probably a piece of DA14.

guess everybody knew this news already,

ATM withdrawls limited to 100EU.

things gonna spread, there are agendas by several different parties,

we know this thing is ugly, they been creating money out of nowhere, and use that to enslave people like you and me,

that is a close loop,

their money is created using keyboard, key in another 0 or 9 at the back of current amount,

does it makes sense why we all choose to be slave, maybe, it is easier to be slave than to be master.

But blaming money won't help solve the problem. The real problem is politics, not money.

It is European thing, most likely.
Here, in Toronto, I can withdraw cash as before. The usual limits.

i agree, blaming money wont solve problem,

since money is a medium to exchange value,
but this medium has been hacked by those who holding power,

government will be there as long as people want to differentiate, this is my country, and that is yours, and mutual understanding is nearly impossible.

no solution to that.

we created those devils above us,

unless everything is transparent, but that is not possible since some party would perceive general people should not know such and such.

we abuse ourself,
