I read somewhere that (cold) boots shorten the life of your computer, but most new computers w/ ACPI let you sleep/standby, which only uses (according to something else I read) about 1% power per hour. So, I actually have been turning off lately (past week or so) although mostly Sleep Mode before that (since August, when I got the laptop).

I'll be honest: I'm not sure it really matters either way. There's no way to really predict how long a computer will last. And electricity isn't that expensive else we wouldn't use computers at all!

Every night, but the computer that has direct access to Internet is powered off only when the electricity distributor company decides to do that.

Laptop, close the lid suspends then after 15min it hibernates. Uses very little wattage even at full throttle because I have disabled everything I'm not using and un-plugged the DVD drive unless I'm watching a movie. Harddrive is usually off, too. Cool

Since I'm using windows on some machines they are turned off when they arent used. You know, Windows need to be rebooted atleast once a day in order to work properly. I won't go into version details here. However the linux box I have (XUbuntu) used by the kids, me, wife, etc... hasn't been turned of for about a year now.

I answered every month, but actually every time a critical update needs restart. Sometimes 3000+ hrs of idle time has built up before restart needed. The work laptop NEVER shuts down. Restart is the only temporary power-off mode.

I use standby when I leave my box for shorter periods of time, or "slightly longer" but have a lot of open windows. For longer periods, I power down completely, and even hit the wall socket so I don't get that 6-9W power drain that a computer in "off" mode draws.

Some power usage stuff I measured: the PowerSlave thread. Btw, my new Core2Quad Q6600 uses a bit more power when idle than the old AMD64x2 4400+, but less when all four cores are maxxed out than two maxxed out cores from the AMD Cool
