one of the concept that i like is 'server core' (even .net framework is NOT there)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Server_2008

imo, this feature should be the basic for every operating system out there,
make it lite, small then let the users add if they want. and the learning curve will be easier and faster too.

what say you?

I see two things happening:

1. Newbie Admins will bitch/moan about how Server2008 is missing stuff, and will have no idea how to install/maintain it.

2. MS could use this as a method to create even more versions of the Server Product, and charge more, especially for features that were free/included in previous versions...

Case in Point. Exchange2000 comes with IM support built-in for use with MSN Messenger. Exchange 2003 separates out IM (now called Live Communication Server) and MS charges you for it.

Will MS for Server 2011 charge you extra for things like Active Directory, IIS, Sharepoint, etc.

However I do agree, that's how an OS should be... Small lean/light core and you add functionality as you see fit. (Which is one of the reasons why Linux has good success in the Server arena).

Well,
I prefer Linux/Unix as a Server Operating System..
I've allready tested some MS Server Products but i don't like them.

Thats what I can say about that..
