Anyone ever play any roguelikes? I stumbled across one the other day:

http://www.dungeoncrawl.org (old, stable 4.0.0 beta 26)

http://crawl-ref.sf.net (new, beta "Stone Soup", tiles version too!)

http://crawlj.sourceforge.jp/down_e.html (old tiles version for Win32 or X11 [Linux, Mac OSX])

http://crawl.akrasiac.org (telnet to play DC-SS online via PuTTY or whatever)

irc://irc.freenode.net (##crawl)

It's hard, though, so be prepared to die a lot (which is permanent, no saves). But it's vast, complex, interesting, and (hopefully) fun! See README.TXT first.

I tried nethack before, but didn't like too much.

But today I tried this Crawl and I liked it. I liked the gameplay better with the GUI version, and has a nice tutorial. I'm going to play more tomorrow.

Thanks for the links rugxulo.

There's a lot of choices to keep in mind, though.

  • Use scroll of identify (at least) before trying new weapons (or else you can't unequip if they're cursed!).
  • If things get too much for you, use a teleport scroll or just run!
  • Try to fight from a distance (via spells or darts), especially strong enemies.
  • Some character classes are easier to play (e.g. minotaur) than others.
  • Don't let your health get too low (rest or use potions or pray).
  • Don't go too deep down into the dungeon too fast before gaining decent stats.

I've been playing Minotaur Berserker a lot lately although I still feel like I haven't quite got the hang of it.

P.S. There's now an official tiled version of Stone Soup included with each release, so don't bother with the outdated one above (unless you prefer it, of course).

Is there anyway to play this game online (like MMORPGs)?
Or is this game offline-only?

oh my god... MMORPG roquelike game. THAT would be a revolutionary thing, but no one would play that. Imagine most today gamers having to face instant death and no ressurections.

Damn... I died by being hungry. lol

My best was a High Elf Wizard that I got to level 3. LOL

How can I use other magic? I've only used the first one.
How can I get food?

What is the best race for magic?
Also, how do you use skills besides combat and magic?

Thanks Very Happy

EDIT: I learned how to learn new magic and get food. I have to concentrate on new strategy now.

OLD SCHOOL! yeah baby! give me one more life...

we can reverse it to invalidate death. only one instruction to change, the one who compare power with 0 (dead).

You can play online via telnet at crawl.akrasiac.org . But it's still a single-player game (although you can watch others).

Save the "real" food (meat, bread, pear, cheese) for when you need it, and butcher/eat corpses (although not all are good for you, you can get sick or poisoned). Resting, praying, or potions will alleviate those (although potions work best/fastest but are rarer).

Dunno, check the README.TXT (it varies).

a for abilities (e.g. berserk rage for Minotaur Berserker).
e for eat.
q for quaff (drink potion).
w to manually wield a different weapon.
z uses wands (limited use but can be recharged eventually) for magic.
f will fire projectiles (darts, spears), if you have 'em. More often = level up.
' will toggle a and b weapons (but make sure they aren't cursed!).

Remember, this isn't going to be an easy game, you will die a lot. You can save, but it gets deleted if you die (so you can continue across sessions as long as you don't kick the bucket).

Get/wear good armor, build up strength, get/save potions and "real" food, and fight "at distance" less-easy enemies (if possible). Remember to rest '5' a lot, and run away or hide behind walls (or read scrolls of teleport or blink) if things get too much. Then rest and retry again.

This game is very funny! Although I didn't understood the console version yet!
I'd like to play on the server with the GUI version, but I think it can't. Crying or Very sad

Okay, tiles and Mac versions are available now. (No, I didn't make 'em.)

BTW, a few more tips:

  • don't forget that you can move diagonally
  • you can also move repeatedly with Shift + direction
  • quick moves to locations can also be made via the map, too
  • you can't berserk if you're hungry (but berserk potions exist too, good for a backup plan)
  • rotten food slight decreases some stats (I think) so drop it quickly
  • don't offer all your butchered corpses to your god (e.g. Trog), save some to eat
  • kill the magic users first! (stupid long-range spells)
  • I forget exactly, but I think either ghosts or uniques can't follow you up stairs (so feel free to flee, coward, heh)

Yes, I still prefer Minotaur Berserker.

Ozzy, I have before, but honestly, I'm not that good really. In fact, I usually forget that I have potions or wands or could run away and thus die fighting (heh).

P.S. My nick there is Armslurp. Yeah, if you check my stats, they're lame. Wink
