Here is one of my favorite movies in the 1990s:

A Time to Kill
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Time_to_Kill_%28film%29
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKxLPJFkD5c

It stars Matthew McConaughey, who just won the Best Actor (Drama) award in the 2014 Golden Globes, Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, and Kevin Spacey.

A storm is heading to the city of Hong Kong, and with it comes another occurrence so destructive, it vows to bring down everything it touches.

A crew of seasoned criminals led by the notorious Cho Nam (Hu Jun), armed with high-powered weapons, pulls off another smooth and violent armored car heist in broad daylight in a crowded street. Whoever tries to get in their way, they will show no mercy. This puts the police force to shame and humiliation.

nice, just finish watching it,

It is the philosophical layer, not the fantastic CG, that makes me rate this film 5 out of 5.

watch this several days ago, nice

YONG, care to elaborate the philosophical layer,

It is a nice movie, though a Hongkonger like me would find the CG far from perfect. The gas explosion (causing massive road collapses) in Central towards the end of the film looks just too fake. Wink

Sure. The film is based on a novel written by a professor of English, Orson Scott Card. So, we would expect that other than the fantastic sci-fi plots, there are deeper messages the author would like to convey to the audience.

The most obvious message is that when one clearly understands his/her enemies, one would start to love them.

But the deeper message is actually about environmental protection. In the film, the lead character, at all costs, destroys the home planet of the ant-like aliens and thus almost exterminates the alien species. Think about it. Such a plot is an analogy indeed. The lead character refers to the ruling species, i.e. human. The ant-like aliens refer to the other species, and their home planet the Earth. ...... Wink

i sense 1 message from that movie,
strike your enemy hard, make them never got gut to hit you back,
but i don't think that is a good idea actually.

I saw a really good film last night "The Lives of others (2006) "Das Leben der Anderen".

"In 1984 East Berlin, an agent of the secret police, conducting surveillance on a writer and his lover, finds himself becoming increasingly absorbed by their lives."

I remember reading a number of positive reviews about this movie a few years back. But I never had time to watch it. See if I could find and watch it a bit later. Thanks. Wink

^^Hi guys,

It's a fascinating film, very well made, and the main character (Ulrich Mühe) plays exceptional.

Tonight i'm gonna watch Disconnect, it looks interesting.
