know it? Great thing.

I've just reinstalled my computer (no more old opera bugreports Wink ), and i wanted to have DOS there too, for several reasons. I found this thing, and i am amazed by it.

It can install to same fat32 partition where you already have winXP-SP2, create dual boot, handle long file names, it has drivers you need (power management, sound cards, mouse, cd-rom, maybe more), everything works there very nicely. No problems with it, it looks just like good old one, plus few new (usuable) features. Too bad my bios doesn't support sound-card somehow, can't make it work there altough i do have drivers.

Give it a try: http://www.cn-dos.net/msdos71/index.htm

It is a rip of the m$ dos from win98, so if you have 98 installed theres no differance.
It's just a stand alone ver.

i see. then i should say i do not beleive they can mount win3.x environment on it. at least in the right way: i tried to install win3.1 on it - setup just refused to install (do not remeber the reason - it was ~8 years ago Wink )
--------
i saw screenshot with 3.11 Smile may be i'm wrong, but 3.1 and 3.11 differs much enough i think.

thanks! there is an answer, possibly:
"Note that by default, Win9x uses a special and incomplete version of MS-DOS 7.x, which is sometimes called "WinDOS 7.x" as a underlying DOS"

For those that are interested in a truely free DOS, then I suggest you check out FreeDOS. (http://www.freedos.org/)

Completely rewritten from the ground up, and is 99.999% compatible with MS-DOS. (It's just as compatible as DR-DOS is to MS-DOS).

Or if you want a moden Dos like OS, that works the same as dos, but from pmode,
can use upto 4GB of memory, module in operation, drivers for floppy, hdd, atapi, vesa, AC97 sound, USB, CLI, GUI, editor, fasm port and less than 50k in size.
You could try Dex4u OS.
http://www.dex4u.com/

NOTE: Its not compatable with dos as in runs, dos program, but it is in commands and programming etc.

Is your hard disk driver available now? That is the one thing I felt was lacking for my needs, and I know you have been working on it. If you have now got it included in the current Dex4U distro I would like to give it a try Surprised)

All the best,

Roberto

Sorry Roberto Waldteufel, i must have mist this post, i have the hdd driver done, in beta form. works fine on all my PC, but not been tested on many others.
Its implemented as a module, so you need to loaded a module, theres one for fat16 the other for fat32, you need to load the module first, at the command line type "run modname.mod" and enter, if on error you will just return to the a: prompt than type C: and press enter you should be at the c: promtp, now you can type commands like "dir" to list file on the root dir, or run program.dex etc.
NOTE: dir acsess is not implemented just root.

You can get it here: http://www.dex4u.com/demos/ModTest.zip

This meens you need a floppy driver on your pc as well as a hdd, to load the module from,
will add a built into kernel ver soon
