The start of the 512b compo is less than a month away. We'd like to know how many people are entering, and in what category. The categories are:
- operating systems
- applications
- games

@Dex4u, like I said in the other thread, I hope you don't mind me making this poll, as this is sorta your compo.

I do not mind at all, as its all fasm users compo Smile.

Does any know if decard is still around as we used his site last time ?, i have asked him to run the web site again, as he did a great job last time.
If he can not, and i run it, i will not enter the compo Crying or Very sad.

Cool!

The only reason I said "less than a month away" is because Dex said in the other thread "This years 512b compo will be started on the 1 AUGUST 2005 and end on the 1 OCTOBER 2005".

Hi there,
I'm new at this forum, and I'll try the compo this year.
I'll apply to category "Application", although I'm also programming my own kernel in asm, but I won't have enough time (and/or ideas ?) to build a single sector OS.

Thats great news now that decard will be running the 512b compo, now i can enter.
As it stands now, it will be under the same rules as last year, other than there will be 3 categories which will be:
- operating systems
- applications
- games

NOTE: All entry's must fit into 512 bytes and be bootable including the "games" and "applications".

Would've prefered a 2KiB limit but I'll see what I can rustle up.

Dex4u: I think you mean "... decard will be running the 512b compo..."

I'm going to enter, probably in the Applications category.

Will these compos be "one by one" or "all in one period of time"?

I would like to participate in applications and games.

@veach1, all in one time period, but you will be allowed to enter one in each category.

I want to enter all categories, but I think Games is the one I'm most likely to be able to do the easiest. All you have to do is throw some stuff together and you have a game. I also like the idea of making a kernel. And an application would be challenging, I'm thinking a simple text editor like ed or vi... I can't wait!

It seems that someone will be directly competing with me - I'm writing a 48x64 text editor! Surprised

From my experience, a game is not as easy to do, as you would think.

Note: one of the rules is that you must provide the fasm source at the end of the compo, or be disqualified.
I for one would find a good small text editor very usefull Cool.

YONG: do you find "vi" to be simple?
Dex4u: i was doing such thing about 2 years ago (very small text viewer (i wanted to make editor later)) + it had nice scroling by pixels (in text mode) + fading on top and bottom edge of text, eg. text didn't just disappear but fade. As viewer it had some 128 bytes, but there were some bugs and i lost sources (like of everything i have ever written 'till 2003). Maybe i'll try to write it again. Too bad i lost VGA specs, doesn't enyone have some?

Text scrolling by the pixel, nice. I'd be interested in that. Too bad you lost your code, that bytes! I'll see if I can find some VGA specs...I haven't read much of them but have found a few on the net here and there. When I get home this evening I'll check and post them if I have anything of significance.

vi is a very powerful text editor. No doubt about that. But it takes a beginner quite some time to master the different modes in which vi operates. So, for beginners, vi is not simple.

I've never actually looked at the source code of any versions of vi. So I really have no idea of its complexity.

Btw, I'm just writing a VERY SIMPLE text editor, which would not have anything special.
