The obvious bots should be deleted. By this I mean:
gxl117 jklmkr ldljlzw k155la3 zyfwh -=KIV=- - abser - - aadora - - amar - - aabb - -abal- - abarm - - acara - !! abahar !! - abased - !!!aaa!!! - aamdas - - alarol - !!!acb!!! !! cacer !! -alser- -aacemw- !! acsas !! !! ambarad !! !! bembu !! ! asoliu ! ! Hulio ! - asaber - ! amrios ! !! asa !! (! ferary !) !! aquiro!! ! ferty ! ! avare ! !! alalk !! ! avax ! !acario! !!abulo!! All obvious bots. To avoid the getting bots, you can add a thingy in the sign up area that requires you to enter a few letters from a picture. |

how about the idea to automatically delete those account which didn't sign in within one month.

Not a good idea. I do know quite a few of the people on the list.

I've added visual confirmation to the registration process. But I see no method to surely determine who of the already registered users is a bot.

i just happened to got ONE i think is quite creative idea :p
how about the idea, the user got to wait for 2 minutes before pressing the submit sign up button? (might put a javascript counter there to notify them) and make that submit button enabled after 2 minute. when the user came to the sign up page, we will add a registration date/time information in his session ID, the reg date/time will be recorded in our database, once the user submit their registration form, we will minus the new time with the recorded time. if more than 2 minutes, we could quite sure that, that guy is a human, else, it might be a bot. for those submission which come before 2 minutes, system will regards it as bot. (and trace them perhaps and report to their ISP) i guess it is logic for those user to fill the sign up form in 2 minutes or more. could put some information there regarding FASM, sort of introduction to them ![]() one of the problem now is, the bot might be programmed to send sign up info interval at 2 minutes ![]() anyway, this idea could limit the damage the bot would causes, it only be able to auto create 1 account in 2 minutes, 30 account in 1 hour. some board use activation link to activate user account, but imo, the bot might host it own email server :S, so might not work also. the board should (PM or email) the admin, once it detects strange flow, example like, 15 sign ups in half hour, <- compare to ordinary half hourly statistic maybe is 1 to 2. i hope somebody will implement this idea, hopefully this helps ![]() sincerely, vbVeryBeginner d(^-^)b http://sulaiman.thefreebizhost.com |

one more creative idea,
how about the user must post 1 message in particular thread (in Test Area perhaps or named a new Area => Signed Up Verification) after he/she signs up ![]() the procedure is like this, after the user submit their registration info, web server will direct him to a page with a instruction eg. eg. a. copy the title of this window and post it in VERIFICATION FORUM -> thread named TITLE eg. b. check the sign up joined date of privalov and post it in the VERIFCATION FORUM thread AGE eg. c. check the current posted message of vbVeryBeginner, and post it to the VERIFICATION FORUM thread POSTNUMBER. answer could be plus minus 0 to 5 ![]() could create one page that enable the user to change activation question, if they think, it is hard. so, the 1st thread, the user post, must be in VERIFICATION FORUM. so, the VERIFICATION FORUM will be coded specially to handle such task, check the answer , if correct then grant fully account activation ![]() sincerely, vbVeryBeginner ![]() |

The problem is not to detect bot during the registration process, I believe the visual confirmation is enough for this purpose. The problem is to check which users are bots from the ones that registered before this confirmation was activated.

how about making a thread and ask people to post something there.
can verify other people whom they know, like what roticv might do. |

I don't understand why any one (registered) would live as a lurker for life... I though one signed up to at least make one post, for lukring it's enougth just enter iste and browse
![]() (maybe it could be that 0 posters who hasn't been to the forum for the past 6 months could be purged) (iirc phpBB holds last time of visit for all users, shouldn't be hard to make an SQL query, post_count=0 and last_visit = now - 6 month, or something like that) |

Being able to download attachments might also be a reason for registering, but right now this board allows downloading as a guest, too.
Such purging is an easy task, I'm just still not sure whether it's really necessary, I have already removed all the users with logins that was looking no doubt like a bots. |

![]() hy all, Privalov just told me there is a thread about this, you can't make someone post for example 10 posts per month, what for if it is needent? those posters should be deleted who have not posted any posts 3 months after sign up - this won't hurt anybody, and there is a little chance of nicks to free up in particular cases. as for the sign ups - have you ever seen a user sign up verification? take a look @ http://yahoo.com click on the mail and sign up for a free account another example: http://aim.com try AOL instant messenger @signup time the best is to give the user a randomly selected picture and let the user tell what's on the picture, like guZuuz46584 and lotsof noise - better to be random be creative show them a picture of a snail and ask what is it ![]() write a program for that if someone wants to flood flatassembler database |

The sign up verification is already working here.

I don't know if two months is enough- what if someone goes on vacation? I'd say that people who don't post for four months (what's the use of having an account if you don't post, since you can view threads without logging in?) or so is almost definitely either a bot or a "forever lurker" or someone who doesn't even remember joining FASM, and can therefore be deleted.
About lurkers: I lurked for maybe a month or two before I actually joined. If people intend to lurk, why create an account? But even if they do, if you lurk for 4 months that's way too long IMHO. So delete 'em! |
