The point is, bios usually contains many bloat and whatnot
This is an attempt to make your PC more predictable, efficient, secure.

Ofc, we can not do much about if the chip manufacturer includes "hooks" inside the chip as a hidden function that can be called, so you might still be concerned about what code you run, what peripherials you plug in your computer, and if you plug in the global net.

If you want legacy BIOS just use SeaBIOS as a payload for it.



So under some circumstances this is kind of overlay on real firmware that does hw initialization. So I'd suggest taking peek into coreboot or u-boot first but you still have to realy on microcode updates for example from 3rd party sources and those are distributed in binary format. When you compile coreboot you can disable this functionality however. There are some guys trying to make more secure coreboo+seabios binary for QEMU: http://www.redseczone.com/ however I'm not sure if the project isn't dead.
