Fasm works fine.

I don't know why gcc is such a pain in the rear.

I have an empty partition, so I will install Gentoo.

Fixit: It would be good if you could post the output of "ld -v"?
Actually other compilers are worse. Smile

Is there a reason you're using Slackware? It seems to be a real PITA. Even Gentoo wouldn't leave your system in such a broken state (and that is really saying something). If you want to be 1337 and still get *some* stuff done, try Arch. Personally, I've tried the whole super barebones linux distros thing and found that it really just ends up wasting a lot of time that would be better spent doing things I actually want to do instead of spending most of my time just trying to get packages installed that I want to work with. (Eg on Gentoo I spent 2 days installing scipy/matplotlib/OpenOpt and a few others. It was awful and totally unnecessary. And that's not even mentioning graphics cards and kernel config-ing.) Just go with something simple like Mint or XFCE Ubuntu and then you can focus your efforts on programming stuff you want to be working on.

And it is MPC that is missing. But if you don't have ld, then getting MPC installed isn't going to fix the problem entirely. Sorry for the delay, I don't come here often anymore.

what the fuck
he is not using slackware, he is using puppy
gentoo is a pita... slackware brings slack

what the fking gentoo, mint and what the...
this is not about distros but about the GNU toolchain, that Fixit does not understand yet (i don't blame him)

@Fixit; if you want to learn linux get a full slackware install
it is the only distribution that won't fight you or complicate things for no reason (won't hold your hand either)
we could also try making this work, if you want

GCC is not pain... as long as it's handled by package manager.
I've been using various Linux distros for almost 10 years:
apt-get install build-essentials
pacman -S gcc
yum install gcc, etc

and so far never having problem with compiling C/C++ codes. Smile

On the other hand, I don't suggest you to use Gentoo. Of course I'm not
saying it is a bad distro. Actually it's a very excellent one. But you have spend more time to configure everything manually. So far,
my experience with Gentoo is it's *very* easy to mis-configure it.
Every time you boot the computer up, you will be greeted with a lovely kernel panic message.

If what you are looking for is easy to use distro, I suggest Debian or Ubuntu, like most people do Smile
