i was thinking,
if some scientist found some breakthrough,
able to modify fruits into bigger and larger,

maybe an apple that weight around 10kg?
or apple that size like a car?

then perhaps, food is everywhere, and people could live in abundance?

of course, i am not sure if abundance is good in long term,

there are too many factors that could shape human destiny,

and how hard is that to make a bigger apple? 10kg apple?
do we need adam's seed?? Laughing

maybe could solve world hunger problem,
but anything that we do, will generate effects and side effects,

and in the end, it is still us to decide to proceed or to halt.

Well, actually people have been doing it for the last 12,000 years, since the moment when so-called Agricultural Revolution (or Neolithic Revolution) has started (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neolithic_Revolution). People transformed wild plants that used to give small fruits, seeds and tubers into domesticated ones giving bigger amount of edible mass. That transformation to species and varietes known nowadays has been obtained by breeding and mixing species. At beginning it had been done by a chance, later more often intentionally. Take as example a simple strawberry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strawberry

I think it could be (theoretically) possible but I doubt it is practical. It's better to buy 10 kilograms of apples than one 10 kg sized because one fruit, if has one place where it was hit, can rot very quickly while loss of 10 kilograms of separated fruits is less possible.

BTW, buy Polish apples - they are tasty and healthy. Poland become the last year the biggest exporter of apples in the whole world (1.2 million tonnes). Wink

Over here we inject and feed our chicken growth chemicals so they grow fast. The result is a fat person.

Did you ever watch the Flintstones?

Of course a larger bird does not necessarily mean it can still fly. Weight goes up at the cube of the size. So lots of things (like bones) need to become thicker to support the weight. Once you reach a certain size it would be too heavy, the power to weight ratio is too low.

Anyhow, we used to go around using horses, now we use cars. Any biological creature used for transport will always be considered inferior to steel and rubber. It just seem to be the way. I'm not saying it is a good thing, just that it is a thing.

What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

And to address the original post about feeding the world with larger products: Actually we have plenty of food available now to feed the entire world population a few times over. So the problem is not abundance. The problem is distribution, politics and greed.

hmm, why nobody build a steel or rubber bird that one could pilot, using solar, petrol, diesel, electric or etc fuel?

24 miles = 38.6 KM, wow.

“What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?” is often used to represent any query so technical yet trivial(of little value or importance) that one could hardly be expected to answer it.
