Of the course the brain can multitask.

How efficient it does so is dependent on :

1. Age
2. Amount of mind altering substance consumed
3. Amount of stress when trying to multitask

Oddly, the difficulty is to focus on one thing - all the brain can do is multitask - true story. We are trained to focus.

I think many assumptions have been made here about tasks and brain functions.

The brain is not like a CPU with a centralised "thinking" core system. It is distributed. When learning a task (like say writing) we need to concentrate upon the task to the exclusion of all other "thinking" functions. And only when we get to such a time when the task becomes "automatic" can we then do this task and allow us to simultaneously learn another task. And by "automatic" I mean the process and control functions come from a different part of the brain from the "thinking" sections. As we grow older more and more tasks become automatic and we are free to learn ever more complex functions and even combine previously separated tasks into coordinated actions.

But since we can't do two thinking tasks together does not mean we can't do two things at the same time. And calling it multitasking in the computer sense I think is misleading.

There was a man who would spend the day with one eye open and the other closed. Every mid-day he switched - claiming that no rest was needed because of this practice.

i remember 2 friends trying to confuse me by asking a question a piece at the same time
luckily i was "zen" at that moment and responded to both of them Smile
they were simple questions but still

same can be when making music, you focus on 2 or more beats at a time
or more demanding, fast paced, games, like rogue legacy for example

we humans can adapt to anything
we just dont need to so we dont

the author had to track at least 2-3 rhythms at a time in he's head to write it

we are also great at recognizing patterns (like lighting that comes natural to us)

i tried closing one eye, but it seems it uses more power to close it than to open it.

Hmm. That would need concentrating on two (or more) things at the same time ... So, probably not.
