I am rebuilding a discarded desktop computer.

It has no wireless card.

I get internet service over an open wifi system.

I was told that I could get a wireless router and connect a ethernet cable from the router to the computer.

If that would work, I could use some recommendations on one that would work with Linux as well.

Thanks,
Andy

yeah,
you could buy one wireless access point, set its mode into web client,
authenticate the ap with wireless network you want, then connect the lan cable from old desktop computer to the ap.

This is a little confusing.

Code:
In computer networking, a wireless access point (WAP) is a device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using Wi-Fi, or related standards. The AP usually connects to a router (via a wired network) as a standalone device, but it can also be an integral component of the router itself.

Would this one work ?

Thanks,
Andy

according to manufacturer web,
http://www.zyxel.com/us/en/products_services/nbg_418n.shtml?t=p

Quote:

WLAN Features
Access point mode
Client bridge mode
Universal repeater mode
Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM)
Wireless scheduling
Wireless output power management
Auto channel selection
MAC address filtering

set it to client bridge mode and associated it with wireless network that you want to connect, then plug in cable from this device to your old desktop.

Stupid decision by me.

Now I have the flu.
