how to get a string into memory by keyboard input without dialogboxes?

I've heard about keyboard hooks, but I don't have any idea how to use the. Oh, and I have heard, that the eat resources (no idea which: CPU or RAM).

what about something like scanf in "C"?
is there any API like that?

You can use the ReadFile API on STDIN, at least in a console application
