where the peoples making questions on this thread run DOS? an emulator? or a real hardware? what's the name of it? I mean all DOS,not MS-DOS only.

My linux and my Windows 7 64-bit cannot run DOS 16-bit programs.
So, I use DOSBox emulator but some "special" programs don't work. I created a bootable USB Key with FreeDOS and now I can run all my DOS programs. 
It is very easy to do with Rufus utility here: http://rufus.akeo.ie/ And you can do it too with UNetbootin utility here: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ |

Only time I've dealt with DOS in a looong time is for retro gaming - that's handled with DosBOX and FreeDOS.
http://www.gog.com bundles several of their games this way. |

What version did you try the last time? If in trouble, just ask at the MAIL-list or me at worst. Use 2041 kernel only and latest versions of all stuff, older versions are BUGGY . |

On the current (W7-64) PC: DOSBox and VirtualBox running IBM's PC DOS 2000.
Old PC multiboots into XP or PC DOS 2000. And FWIW, IBM's PC DOS 7.10 can be downloaded from the IBM site, as part of a scripting toolkit. It even includes a FORMAT32.EXE to format big disks with FAT32... _________________ Robert AH Prins robert dot ah dot prins at the big account from Google  |

You can run most DOS programs or DOS commands with XP.
Those who decided to go with Vista + lost out on the advantages of running from a command line. That was Microsoft's plan for those who did not seek knowledge and to increase revenue.
But M.S. has continued to write console mode programs. That shows how much M.S. thinks of the value of such programs. For example. From a cmd prompt, you can selectively delete only certain files. It currently can't be done using a GUI. It could be done, but doing so would make a large program that would be slower than a console program. |
