This Image or Image

There are many of these all over the internet. But I can't imagine what is their purpose Confused Did someone knows what is the purpose of these pictures? I even can't think about proper google search with explanation...

IMHO, these are very ugly and I wonder how is it possible so many people to use them on their sites. I often skip some search results, because of images of this type.

Yeah, I see them allot, I believe at mostly stack overflow... Used as blank avatars (like asmhack said).

Infact I just went to stack overflow and checked there avatars and yes, it looks like they're just default avatars, ugly yes, but each user has a different one... which tell me the server generates one for each user...

Could it be some kind of identification image or barcode? It seems quite similar to High Capacity Color Barcode:

Well, if they wanted to create unique avatar images for their users, this approach IMHO is far from good.
Missing avatar is better than this auto generated pictures. They only eat internet traffic for nothing, IMHO. Smile

A forum without edfed is definitely not the genuine fasm forum. Wink

One is zero; zero is one.

The end is the beginning; the beginning is the end.

Yes, I found it. And just wanted to post in this topic. It is strange, you decided to post here in the same time. Very Happy

Anyway, gravatar have some very funny default avatars. I still wander why the people decide to use these ugly triangles.

In http://asm32.hopto.org , I implemented "monsterid" defaults - like this:
