After watching the movie "Hackers" (which I'm sure all of you have seen), I always wanted to know how did they get so good at it? And yes, I know it's just a movie but hackers are real! Now, people like Kevin Mitnick (watch this documentary about him: Freedom Downtime), Jonathan James (aka c0mrade), and the person(s) that hacked into the PlayStation Network. Now, those are all black hats. Now people like Linus Torvalds, Tsutomu Shimomura, Bill Gates, Stephen Wozniak and not to forget our hero, Tomasz Grysztar are the white hats.

Now, my question is, "How did they learn all of this stuff?"

I've always wanted to know how to hack, but I don't have any knowledge; or even worse, experience. I know there are people who can hack into "places". Now, where or how can I get this info about hacking?

Hello cypher,
I'm not a die-hard (pro) hacker by any means, but there are two places on the web that I go to to read up on the latest info and news in the hacking community:
http://hakin9.org/
http://www.2600.com/
hakin9 deals more with hacking in the business world, and 2600 deals with more of the homebrew hobbiest hacker.
Hope this helps you on your hacking knowledge quest!

Homebrew kicks ass.... I am one of them (low profile though).

http://www.defcon.org/ is the place where you'd want to go.

They conduct conferences and all sorts of people go there. They also have hands on activities like CTF (Capture The Flag: In which users/hackers must compete and hack computers against each other.

Who said that I'm script kiddie ? I'm learning instead of using "tools" mate Overflowz because it's my favourite bug in programs so I'm trying always to find in some apps bugs kind of like this. Don't judge me like that I'm script kiddie
I told before post, I prefer learning instead of using tools.
to be successful like that hackers did, you need luck and hard work
I wasn't saying that you are script kiddie. I was saying that by being a script kiddie not much can be learnt. [I think need to structure my sentence better].

Dex4u, That's amazing. That's like grounding your parents for grounding you. Hmmm... Im getting some ideas here.

typedefIt seems that PHP & JavaScript are pretty powerful! Also I need to learn SQL for my website to add a database. I need one-on-one help.

madmatt, thanks alot man Very Happy hakin9.org seems like resource haven. This is a great start.

Defcon? Seems like an amazing place! I wish I could go there. It's the best way to learn... by meeting other hackers a share knowledge. Have any of you been there?

I hear DoS is pretty simple. All that must be done is to send alots of request to the server and stop it. (BTW, I am not implying anything here. I dont think I will be blocked like Dex4u because if MafiaKid can say I to a TV network, then I can say it anywhere.

About DoS, yes it's simple. You just need to send lots of reuqests to server and result will be crash. Anyway, DoS sucks nowadays. New powerful way to crash servers is syn-flood. For more information, check wikipedia - whats difference between DoS and DDoS and also what the hell means syn-flood. Good Luck ! Wink

Try nmap

Scanning the network can collect lots of information and gain much knowledge about the network how is designed and how it works. You will generally need to be careful though. There are servers and clients out there.
