"Baba Marta" means word for word "Granny March".
It is old Bulgarian magical ritual and tradition. On 1st of March we bind each other so called "Martenitsa" - it is twined and twisted red and white thread, very often with tassels at the ends, that have to be tied on your wrist (or put on your clothes).
You have to carry the martenitsa until you see the first stork, then you have to tie it on some blossom tree and to wish something.
It is old pagan custom, still very popular here in Bulgaria. Of course the kids are very happy. Smile

Here I want to tie you one - you have a choice: Smile

ouadji, you know where to read. Wink Yes the names of the tassel-dolls on the first photo are Pizho for the man (or maybe Pijo) and Penda for the woman.

looks like ukrainian doll "motanka" - it also has ritual meaning to protect owner from magic evil.

"motaty" means "to reel"

@JohnFound:

Thank you for your "Granny March" blessings. Razz

I love the second Martenitsa as the bright orange color looks truly appealing to me. Razz

I just saved the image to my USB memory stick. Let me see whether or not my new charm will bring me good luck - I really need to find some jobs this month; otherwise I will be doomed! Crying or Very sad

Well, it is actually almost-red-orange on the second picture (compared with the first and third). I suppose it is matter of linguistic - English simply have less words for intermediate colors. Smile
