Wow, that's pretty freakin' awesome. I made a smart ass comeback without even meaning to. That was actually meant for sleepsleep to confirm that he knew dd would completely screw his entire HDD/partition(dependent on invocation). I had no idea you had responded. lol

Safe? Seems not to be the best place to store your backup HDDs. Wink

why not just design a personnal file system.

something that will be formated in severals steps.

first step, determine the data structure of folders.

second step, give an encryption key

third, use it.

all datas will be recoreded in a crypted way, and with a personnalised data structure, letting it very hard to recover, even with the algo, because the need of encryption key...

and why not a multiple stage encryption?

but please, don't destroy phisically the hard drive, give it to me, i will use plates as mirrors in a solar coocking project. and motors as generators in wind power project....

Well pretty much all of the good crypto tools for HDDs do exactly that (except for the "personnal file system" thing though).

Once you have a fully encrypted drive "forgetting" the key, or changing the key to something random, is as good as completely erasing the entire drive. And "forgetting" can be done at any time, even if someone steals your drive. Without encryption you would have no control over who accesses the data on the drive.

Or just get a Hot Blast furnace and through your HDD in with a couple of pieces of dry locust wood.

Proof == gone!

[/RedNeck] Laughing

You see, having a furnace would not be as much evidence as if they found one of those HDD destroying machines Wink

Neither would a hammer be seen as evidence. That's what I used to "demagnetize" my crashed HDD.

I didn't know locust had a "t" in it.

Me neither until I found it on wikipedia, I always here it pronounced with like Low cuss... Hard to think there might be a "t" there...
