Has anyone tried the 'IBM Lotus Symphony' software? Any problems installing? or even more important, any problems un-installing?

There are more than OpenOffice alternatives(freeware/closed source though).

I think the only free alternative to OpenOffice is KOffice.
It's now available on Windows too.

just go web-based, there are even open sourced http://opengoo.org/.

web-based == free, no need installation (no craps in registry), cross platform, it doesn't use hundreds or thousands Mbs of your HD, etc.

web-based = requires internet connection
i don't have mobile internet connection, so this could be troublesome...
and what if the connection is distrupted?

but opengoo looks interesting
maybe i should setup PHP, Apache & MySQL on my laptop... Smile

For Windows, if I'm not mistaken, there must be a port of the GNOME Office or at least parts of it (AbiWord 100% and maybe Gnumeric). But I still prefer OOo on any OS.

But....... who the fish buys Microsoft Office products? There are lots of free/open source alternatives.

I think Office 2010 beta is pretty good.
At least I don't use 'the illegal copy' Smile

Sure Open Office is pretty good, but for some reasons I still fell Office is a bit better.

Actualy I prefer to use LaTeX (and LyX as the editor) over word processors, but unfortunately LaTeX is not popular among common users.

I prefer latex too - though not through lyx. I tend to use vim for everything.
