Off topic:

"Does Firefox have an error in rendering quirks mode?" or "Quirks in Firefox's Quirks mode?"
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/volunteer.php

When viewed in Firefox 3.5 all I see on that site is a bunch of diamonds with little '?'s in them, my encoding is set to utf-8.

When viewed in IE7 with utf-8 encoding that site appears perfectly fine.

I noticed that Firefox uses quirks mode to display that page and another page on the BOINC site, but the rest of the pages on the site render fine in standards mode.

Click thumbnail to enlarge image. This is not a problem with any add-ons I have, either. I ran Firefox in safe mode with everything at default settings and this error persisted.

On my setup with Firefox 3.0.11 it says standards compliance mode and it looks fine.

Is there any way to force it to use standards mode?

@windwaker,

I don't see the problems you see and the page is served as utf-8 and is not in quirks mode. Did you force the character encoding under View->Character Encoding?

Yes, I have it forced as UTF-8. Why is it putting it in quirks mode?

Also, here is start of page source as seen from firefox:

It's not in quirks. LocoDelAssembly is saying he doesn't see the problem either. What is telling you it's in quirks?

I didn't see the markup you posted before I responded.

Those are two entirely different pages. Are you saying you are copying the markup from the same page?

Those are the exact same page, the top one is what is seen from FF, bottom is IE.

How are you copying that? Do ctrl+U to get the markup.

copied it straight to my post.

I think we're getting a little too off topic. Loco, could you seperate our discussion into a different thread?

I have this:
Code:

</head>

<body>

Are you familiar with WireShark? Why don't you capture the HTTP request and post it?

I have the same as Loco. There's something else going goofy here but it's my bedtime, too.

EDIT: The page is being redirected. I wonder if you're having trouble with redirects by your ISP. Don't know why but ....

Wait, a simpler method. Grab a copy of quetannon here: http://flatassembler.net/examples/quetannon.zip

Then make it listen on port 80 and then in your browser type (or just click) this address: http://localhost/volunteer.php

Copy the result. Here mine:
Code:
GET /volunteer.php HTTP/1.1
Host: localhost
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.11) Gecko/2009060215 Firefox/3.0.11 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8
Accept-Language: es-ar,es;q=0.8,en-us;q=0.5,en;q=0.3
Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate
Accept-Charset: ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7
Keep-Alive: 300
Connection: keep-alive
Referer: http://board.flatassembler.net/post.php
Cookie: ASP.NET_SessionId=m4ktfzyybj301z45tkj45but
(Ignore the cookie, probably it is sitting there because I used Visual Studio recently)

Pity you removed the hex codes because that said a lot about what is going on. But never mind, after seeing the hex values it seems to me that the target website is sending bogus data to you. Most probably the "3.5" in the request header has made the server jump to a different code path that has not been properly tested at their end.

Try to change your request header to "3.0.11" and then see what you get in response.
