CP/M-86 / DR/DOS went open source and is called Open DOS. You can look through the entire source. There are even updates to it for newer hardware and larger drives. It's a full real mode OS that was taking on MS/DOS for a while

the source wouldnt unzip, the unzip file they gave me didnt even work

I also suggest to inspect some FreeDOS sources. There is a mouse driver for FreeDOS, called CuteMouse.
