I think it would be great to have the possibility to access this forum via NNTP, sth like a newsreader. I think this would be nice, because the most here is Code. e.g. The Problem with the Code Highlighting could be done with a plugin for thunderbird. and the server is sometimes very slow.
with that i think it could be faster.

It is a bad idea Very Happy

Now seriously I think it is not easy to implement because probably the hosting service wont provide enough resources to do that (i.e. HTTP/S only and maybe FTP at most, but NNTP is a whole different protocol that doesn't even run on the same ports that the other three protocols run on).

I would give my home connection.
southern Germany,
1mbit/s upload
I could set up a computer with about 3 GB Hdd
or with about 15 euro per month we could host our own root server, (or with less, we could do a virtual root) server

I thought HTTP/HTTPS/FTP all ran on completely separate ports and protocols?

I think it's a bad idea, because RSS and Atom have replaced NNTP.

RSS should be possible, but, from what i hear, Tomasz is a very, very busy man.

But think of it this way, when we go that far, why not just add something so we can post from our email a well. But once again, that's alot of time. I, personally, would be happier with IRC, but that's just my preference. Irregardlessly, i don't see any of it happening due to restraints on the developer.

i would prefer a Forum System, becaus i can read a post that is 5 months (or so) old...
with IRC i can't do that.

the Point of NNTP is, that with atom and RSS i have to load a huge ammount to see the page and it's content.
and with nntp i can download 5 threads and can disconnect, read it on my notebook (or mobilephone?) while not connected to the internet.

an other Idea to implement nntp into php2bb:
newssync

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=121946

i think this could be done in one or 2 days.
without a lot of work.
i could help if someone needs.
