as an idea ( not a project of course) i had the monolythic computer.
simple, a single chip that include all the functions of a computer in less than 3.5" drives.
CPU, chipset, peripherals on ide, pci, isa, pcie , usb & agp bus in internal.
some outputs, like VGA , 4 usb3.0 plugs, wireless usb, audio I/O, wifi,
com1, lpt1, PS/2 and (12Volts) wireless energy.
or all wireless, VHF and UHF instead of VGA, FM instead of audio, no old
fashion COM, LPT and PS/2.
looks like a perfect brik, with soft angles r < 1 mm
dimensions in centimeters = 10 * 2.5 * 14.6
color is personalisable. mirror, black, white, glass, diamond, aluminium
a led indicate it is on.
to start the computer, just touch it with 3 fingers in triangle, or draw
something, follow a line with your index, as you want.
can fly in the vaccun, and float at the level you want.
less than 12 USD in 5783.
manufactured by edfedIntelNasa incorporation.

Yeah, they already exist. Search for embedded PC's or embedded computing. There are x86 based and ARM based as standard but you can also find other less common CPUs used also, like Z80 and 8048. Unfortunately the price is not USD12 but they are not all that expensive either.

Long before that, there will be (DNA-based) direct neural interfaces, maybe even inner-cranium computers. And I doubt they'll still be using millenium-old, archaic COM, LPT, PS2, USB, ...
to start the computer, just touch it with 3 fingers in triangle, or draw something
No, they'll just control it with their minds.

It seems clear we need both extremes: the monolithic computer and the flexible multi-core multi-bus expansive computer. Those extremes should move further apart and fragment functionally (which seems to have been going on for a long time already). We might see role reversals as we find new ways to use computers - making either the monolithic or complex computer more applicable than previous - to the point of not knowing which is which!

I suggest researching "SOAC" or System on a Chip devices, like the AMD Geode.
