Ram pages on x86 can also be 4meg, 2meg, or 1... was it gig or terabyte? (recent AMD addition).

Also note that harddrives don't let you access less than one sector at a time, with the most used sector size being 512 bytes.

Your filesystem idea sounds too simplistic, better to look into the various systems that already exist - there's a lot of them.
