Hey there everyone.

I got the Orange Box set for Christmas, and I have started playing it. Portal works great for it, but I run into problems with Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and Team Fortress 2.

In the upper right hand corner of the game screen, a red warning usually appears that says "OS Warning: Paged-Pool Memory Low". And after having it there for a few minutes of still playing, the game shuts itself off. I've noticed if I'm playing HL2: E2 and kill myself after I get it, then it loads back to wherever I last saved, and the message goes away (I think it frees memory at that point), but it's still a pain in the neck to deal with.

I've looked on Valve Software's support site, and they say either disable Norton (which I have been doing), or delete it all together (which I'm not going to do because it will cost me good $$$ and it's my form of protection for my PC). They don't give a support number for you to call, so I'm screwed with that.

I looked on google and came across a forum which showed how to increase the paging file size, which doesn't do any good, so I'm thinking is there a way to increase paged-pool memory for this program?

Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Oh, I failed to mention that I have the recommended 1GB of RAM.

You have three options, 1) stop other programs from running (which you rejected), 2) buy more RAM, 3) Don't play games Smile

Well, I don't think it's so much a hardware problem as it is how much memory Windows is allocating for paged memory itself.

You could try changing the registry setting for paged pool size (google it), but I have read many scare stories about how the system will crash and generally become unstable, so do it at your own risk.

Sure that increasing the swap file doesn't help? Neither it delays the warning for a while?

BTW, I'm very sorry for your monetary investment on Norton AV, I wouldn't install it even if they pay to me for doing so.

I think they did a horrible design at allocating memory for the game IMHO. Even for relatively small areas it can do it.

Like...
+1MB... +1MB... (repeat process 500 times)... Loading screen comes up... FREE EVERY FRICKING BYTE AT ONCE AND LAG THE COMPUTER TO HELL UNTIL DONE.

My guess is they wrote it in C++ and used 'new' everywhere.

I've tried and am at a 4 GB page file, but I am starting to think there might be a memory leak in the program.
