New to macros

I am in protected mode in my os.. and I was thinking of creating math macros.. for it.. 1st is this a good idea or should I just create functions for it?
would someone mind showing me an example of the formula below or sim
that I could test.. and see how it would be used..

val= a + ( b * c /d )
