Do you think it's possible to make money programming free software (open source)?
Some people say IT IS possible.
From my understanding of free software, anyone can download the source, and so the person wouldn't buy the software.
Forget about making money from donations, web site advertising, etc.

Focusing just on the software itself, is it possible to make money with it being free instead of proprietary?

Lots of people seem to be following the free software philosophy. But wouldn't this destroy the programmer's career? We may reach a point where every software needs to be free. And so, no programmer will make money.

Share your opinion!
I don't understand quite well GPL. So, I may have said some very dumb thing there. Smile

you will not get money for the software you right. correct.
but you will get money for the services you provide. got it.
I'll explain:
say X is your free & open source software.
every one can see it's source & modify it ... etc. etc.
now a programmer will like to see it's source but an average user will not!
a user is the person who pays for your software.
but you are giving him it for free.
now the poor user have some problem installing X.
you or any one can install it and charge a nominal fee.
say X is a big project so a huge amount will be charged for X's installation and
customization. etc. etc.
now someone has to manage/administer the X, so he will also be paid

Hmm... if you like to write the "write-only" or "can-be-modifed-only-by-me" code that idea can be good... but if you generate extra super code.. it will be a gun in your oponents hand :]
