I use http://notepad-plus.sf.net for all light programming tasks... works pretty well, imho.

how do I set notepad++ to use the assembler highlighting for my .fasm files?

By changing their extension to .asm, as should be?
Or manually choosing language->Assembler, or Settings->Styler Configurator, where you can add the extensions of your choice. |

VIM does support FASM syntax highlighting (:syntax enable then :set syntax=fasm since it defaults to GAS).
Or try something like WinASM Studio, RadASM, SciTE, etc. BTW, don't forget the really obvious choices: FASMW, FASMD, or Fresh. |
