Hello,

Could somebody please point me to some helpful documentation in regards to what happens to a generic kernel when it makes the transition from real mode to protected mode.

I have been digging trough Linux kernel documentation (handy, since the source is all right there) and I find it mentioned in several areas that a kernel in protected mode has some special standpoint, I find the same to be said about the windows kernel, but it's all very very vague. I cannot derive any useful information from it.

For the record, I am not making a kernel myself or trying to patch up another, I am merely looking at how to smuggle some code into the protected memory durring boot time, independendly of the OS.

Thanks for any help.

you should rather look for something about 386 protection mechanism, descriptor tables, selectors, paging etc...

processor's system programming manual is most exhaustive documentation, but somewhat hard to read.

DustWolf: Chris Giese has written a bunch of protected mode examples. I think those examples can help you quit a bit. You should find them by using search engines.
