Ever try FreeBasic? It's awesome 'cause it can compile to machine code, and I've done low-level OS writing with it before as a test!
The link is this: http://www.freebasic.net/ |

I used FB for awhile, but I can't stand it cause it's actually more bloated
than C. Nothing will ever compare to DOS COM files written in ASM. I deleted all my compilers recently. I'm moving 2 DOS ASM. If I can't do it in ASM,I'll either not do it at all or use QBasic. I have a lot of QBasic friends. |

2, DJGPP is what you used before, and that is slightly bloated because it's POSIX compatible and supports LFNs (and, well, it's GCC, it's supposed to be bloated/powerful). Try OpenWatcom (which can produce 16-bit real mode as well as 32-bit pmode).
BTW, FreeBASIC is ridiculously good, and it will be MUCH better in the next release (supposedly). Face it, in ASM you don't have the libraries that C (and FreeBASIC) have. And, you can always do inline ASM. |

I would recomend the Visual C++ Express edition but then you get all those dependancies. Besides you can even write Linux exe, dos com/exe, Windows exe, etc with Open Watcom. I'm going to check out that freebasic compiler. Looks cool. I'm not really a fan of basic anymore but for the sake of nostalgia I'll check it out. |
