term "boot loader" means "loader of OS" - it does not need OS to work - OS needs bootloader to be loaded and started by bootloader when PC boots. if there is no OS - only bootloader - it will be just a program of 512 bytes runs at start from disk - generally it will be not bootloader if does not load any

Ok, thank you for the info, as I was somehow confused when I inserted my friend's "bootloader" floppy and rebooted, I got a message saying something like "Windows ME Repair Startup" even if my friend didn't have that string stored in his source.. But we came to the conclusion it was command.com's fault because he had it on the floppy.
And BTW, how do you name a "bootloader" which doesn't load any OS, but prints text to the screen using BIOS int's?? I am interested in doing stuff like that and the term bootloader doesn't suit here... Thanks! |

Bootable eg: bootable game, bootable hexdump, bootable cdplayer.

Thanks Dex! My next project will be "The Bootable DOS System", but it's real name is: "Time Bomb Danger System"

My next project will be "The Bootable DOS System", but it's real name is: "Time Bomb Danger System" I do not think many people would try a program call "Time Bomb Danger System" This may help you with your Dos sys, as its not only a bootable Dos, but also a OS tut. http://board.flatassembler.net/topic.php?t=5275&start=0 |
