What debugger do people recommend for linux ?

Im used to debuggers in windows allowing me to step through code line
by line and I would like to do this under linux too.

You could try:
a) GDB - console debugger with command line interface
b) ALD - similar to GDB but assembly oriented, maybe outdated
c) Linice - kernel debugge similar to SoftICE, better try it under VMWare (VMWare player is free, and config files are easy to edit).
d) rasta, Novell Kernel Debugger - other kernel debuggers

I would recommend ALD. Intel-syntax, allows you to set breakpoints, step through code, all the usual debugger things. Only thing is that it's console based and can be a little hard to learn how to use. But once you get the hang of it its a great tool.

Try insight. It is front end for gdb. And it is good.

Thanks for the responses. Ill check them all out.
My preference would be for a gui front end.
