Programming PCI is a major subject, yet nobody online seems to know much about it. Maybe there are books (offline) about it. I've found some things, but once again they assume previous knowledge, or as you say, they only use C. Unfortunately, the linux driver sources wouldn't help much. I want to know how to program them, not how the linux driver is written. In other words, I don't want to translate/write a driver if I don't even know how it works!

What happens on newer PCI sound cards witht he EMU8000? (That is the chip that allow the soundbank to work on AWE32+ soundcards). I tried once to load the AWEUTIL proggie after running the SBPCI driver on a SB128 and it wouldn't run. How could I enable this cool feature?
