Good day! MenuetOS 64 is not ENTIRELY closed-source. You can obtain application's and driver's sources here: http://menuetos.net/64bit.htm

The reason why Menuet64 is closed source is because Menuet32 was ruthlessly forked and new copyrights slapped to the beginning of almost all 32bit source code, without our permission. Some people don't respect international laws.

You probably doesn't remember it exactly, because we forked AFTER your statement about closed source nature of M64 development.

M64 actually was with closed source because you wanted to make money on it http://coolthemes.narod.ru/history/ch5.html

wrz 11 15:00:51 <VMikael> I think we should thik about what we want from a 64 bit os
wrz 11 15:01:31 <jpelczar> - separate address space for each process
wrz 11 15:01:40 <jpelczar> - memory management
wrz 11 15:01:55 <VMikael> how about money ?
wrz 11 15:01:59 <jpelczar> money ?
wrz 11 15:02:08 <VMikael> yes

At your website it says you forked at 2004, which is one YEAR BEFORE Menuet64 development started. And the fork originally happened months, maybe year(s) before that. And everybody makes money with code, what ever the license is.

And you Wildwest have a special place in the closed source decision. Since you are spreading confusion and balkanization, as usual, instead of coming up with anything constructive.

Ville, be more precise. I am from the Balkans. Wildwest is a Russian, it is a slightly different kind of untermensch. Razz

Balkanization can also refer to dividing practically any project. It has been used to describe changed protocols and user interfaces, etc.

Ah, I got it now. Although, not very common term for software development.

Where did you see my words about fork in 2004? My website said that you leaved M32 in 2004 to start M64 development. You made first release of M64 in June 2005 with statement of closed source model of development and we made first release of KolibriOS in October 2005. So, you have to be precise, as JohnFound said.

Around 2003-2004, Mario came along and created hes fork, while you were spewing your usual distractions to the forums. Also, new copyrights were slapped to the beginning of almost all 32 bit source code, without our permission.

Another benefit for closed source is that now we can concentrate on the actual coding instead of having these endless and time-consuming talks.

You cant change the history, Sergey, no matter how much you spin it around.

It wasn't fork - due to low frequency of official releases he published his distribution with newest patches, improvements (between official releases). And there were several distributions at that time - chinese, german, etc. You didn't state that distributions aren't allowed and didn't said about any legal issues until 2007.

You are just making that up as usual.

There were several distributions and all the others respected the orginal copyrights. You've had atleast seven years to address the copyright issue. And what have you done about it ? Nothing. All you are trying to do is endlessly explain your actions away.

So you can read my original answer about why M64 is closed source.

Well, I decided to check the KolibriOS sources and found that your copyright notice is still there. Twice: Line 38, 41 : kernel.asm

@John New copyrights slapped to the beginning of almost all 32 bit files and in other places the original copyrights are completely missing.

We're not going thru this BS again with M64.

But KolibriOS is not MenuetOS distribution anymore. It is only based on MenuetOS and there are more than 50% differences in the source. Kolibri developers have the copyrights on these new parts. Or you claim the copyright on the new parts as well?

Back then the difference was less than 0.1 percent.

First the new copyright was added to the beginning of kernel.asm. Then I asked about this and the answer was that they slappd new copyrights to the beginning of ALL kernel files, most completely unmodified.

At that time, Menuet32 was already working system with ring-3 protection, pre-emptive and real-time multitasking, GUI, applications etc.

Do you want them to also fork and claim copyrights to Menuet64 ? No, its not going to happen. They should find another project to fork.

The only solution which guarantees some peace of mind is to go closed source and make sure it will never happen again.

Menuet32 is here to stay. Although 32bit coding in general is phasing out.

64 bit SMP is today. Practically all computes are 64 bit.
