I am only a slightly impressed with the value of these optimizations. If you need to do a lot of pop counts (which is obviously not the case here), you are better off packing them into SSE registers and using the 'pshufb' instruction. This even out performs the 64 bit 'popcnt' instruction, which was my initial suggestion.
