My head is sore from bumping my desk with this problem.

I read the manual for my wireless router Zyxel NBG-418N and found it confusing.

I made a post at Zyxel forum, but no response.

I would like the router set up for Universal Repeater so I can use the router to pick up wifi signals so I can connect to the internet.

I want it to be both an access point and wireless client at the same time.

Best regards,
Andy

Fixit,

Any device mode (for a given unit) except Router means that you need separate device for WAN link (another router for AP, another AP for Universal Repeater and Client Bridge). Would you please describe your set-up, in spades? Wink

I have my wireless router setup with LAN1 cable going into Ethernet connection of my laptop.

I was told that it could be used as a wifi card ?

I have a Fast Ethernet Switch ?

Fixit,

Well, I've made another error: every device mode needs external WAN access. It can be some kind of a modem (ADSL/cable/etc.), direct Ethernet connection (I've used to have it, so it's the source of the error) or something else (like satellite link Wink). As I understand, your laptop is wired to the unit, and you need to set up ZyXEL so it can pick up Wi-Fi AP signal to use it for WAN link? Either UR or CB mode will do (it depends on whether you need to spread access via Wi-Fi too).

What's the story about Ethernet switch? Is it used for WAN access?

My goal is the use the wireless router in a desktop system that has Linux instead of buying a wifi card.

(The guys on the Puppy Slacko forum have no experience with reconfiguring wireless routers. )

But for now, I want to get it working on my laptop which has XP.

My wifi signal comes from my apartment office which offers free internet access on an open network.

It seems like a wireless router should be able to pickup that signal so I can have internet access.

This stuff is beginning to look like rocket science to me. Smile

Fixit,

Switch your unit into Universal Repeater mode using web interface, ensure that its IP (192.168.1.2) won't conflict with AP settings (that IP should be excluded from DHCP pool of AP) and AP will accept unit's MAC address as allowed. Now using web interface at that IP, choose AP's SSID in Network/WLAN/AP Select and provide credentials, if required. That probably will do.
