I am using libX in FreshLib Linux port. It is very light and fast.

Theres also weston/wayland which some project might replace xorg windows server in some cases

http://wayland.freedesktop.org/ its in the works

I think qt, gtk etc all use x windows server/xorg...

But what is your programming language? or do you want to embbed it in a FASM program?

I think that wasn't mentioned yet: there is wxWidgets,KDE,QT(all for C++) and Motif(it's C) too. But if you want to write make your own,you need to look at in the X window. Almost all toolkits run on top-of this API. In fact,they are a wrapper of it. (It's an UNIX-like enviroment) in case of windows or MAC you need to look at to its native GUI. Gtk run in such platforms too,they run on top of its native GUI.

If you will choice one-of this toolkit,I think Gtk+ a nice choice.

Not sure how great it is yet. Ill have to make an install of archlinux and try it myself. I tried in the past with some other distro and it didnt seem so far along but i think there have been updates and new releases now
