Self-modifying code apparently slows everything down like mad (esp. on P4 or Athlon64) if you aren't like 4 kb away from the part you modify. (To avoid too off-topic here, I guess I'll post details in "Projects and Ideas / another DOS Befunge93 (BEFI.COM)" ). It's clearly not a good idea if you want maximal speed.
