Wait for it... HA!

In all seriousness, I honestly thought she was hitting a distortion box... but have had a few heated conversations about it since ...

Is she doing that growl with her own voicebox? Hmmmmm I say. I sang briefly when I was younger for a heavy metal group and I got to do similar noises through a distortion box... haha

Oh, you mean you've never heard, let's say, Angela Gossow's death growls?! oO

Thanks for that! The question remains for both of them: is there a mic-operated distortion box being triggered, or is that their actual real, true and proper overmodulated vocal chords coming through... I can growl, but not like either of those two ladies haha

It's just a series of techniques that need to be perfected. Everything from the Mongolian or Kazakh polyphonic, overtone and throat singing to the more extreme metal growls, screeches and pig squeals, simply requires mastering the right technique and using it in the proper way so as to maximize the output while limiting the damage.
There are actual voice coaches that specialize in this kind of genres. Same as the rest.

It doesn't really matter if it's a man of a woman. You can usually notice the difference because obviously a woman's lungs, diaphragm and larynx are smaller than a man's, but that's about it. Both are very capable of producing the creepiest monstrosities. Wink

I do not think it is real throat singing.

Just compare with natural women's voices:

Sorry there are too few examples available, since it is uncommon for women.

No one said it was. These are death metal growls. Different parts of the throat are used. You won't find throat singing in metal unless you're listening to very specific genres and bands, for example some folk metal bands from Sweden, Finland or Mongolia.

If you listen to men doing khoomei, kargyraa, etc. you'll hear the same kind of sounds as the videos you've posted, only a bit lower.

The same goes with death growls. Both women and men are capable of producing the sound, but it's slightly different. AFAIK extreme metal bands don't fake vocals. Some non-metal genres such as aggrotech do have distorted vocals where they literally use distortion pedals.

I think this topic is about woman's vocal, not man's one.

This is a question of belief for one who is not the eyewitness.
